ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES FOR PERU

The deterioration of the environment in recent decades due to the explosive development of industry, population growth, consumerism(1), and the inefficient use of natural resources, has occurred worldwide. Peru is no stranger to this situation. We must reflect on what the position of our country is, how it looks and how it will be affected in the short and medium-term by the environment if we do not improve the way in which we carry out our daily activities. By slowing down the onslaught(2) of environmental pollution, we come to realize that this type of large-scale action, with very ambitious goals, highlights the alarming situation caused by the threat of climate change and the inefficient management of natural resources.

Being one of the countries with the largest forest area in the world, illegal logging practices and the appropriation of land for the use of the agri-food industry, with precarious and unsustainable practices, entails very high levels of deforestation. The development of urban areas, oil and mining operations, the construction of a large number of roads, illegal plantations, and the pollutants that are generated in these productions are other factors causing this deforestation. Nevertheless, a good part of Peru's current economy depends on the extraction and export of mineral resources such as silver, copper, lead, and gold, among others. There is a high level of illegal exploitation that involves the destruction of natural areas and entire ecosystems. Moreover, the country's traditional agriculture has been succeeded by intensive industrial agriculture with a high environmental impact, which does not hesitate to abuse agro-toxic products such as fertilizers and pesticides, in addition to stealing a large number of hectares from forest and jungle lands.

According to the 'Second National Communication of Peru to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change': “Peru is one of the 10 megadiverse countries in the world, it has the second-largest Amazon forest, the largest tropical mountain chain, 84 of the 104 life zones(3) identified on the planet, and 27 of the 32 climates of the world ”. With greater emphasis, for the reasons already mentioned, our country, which depends largely on exports of traditional products, should have as a priority to take concrete measures to preserve the environment and thus guarantee the well-being of future generations of Peruvians. Our country is aware that one of the greatest challenges it faces in the not so distant future are those in environmental matters. For this reason, it has been proposed to achieve objectives within this area to increase and protect the development of our country and thus direct its course, the strategies and measures that will be carried out to achieve them.

  1. The protection or promotion of the interests of consumers.

  2. A large number of people or things that are difficult to cope with.

  3. A life zone is a biogeographic region that is delimited by climatic parameters such as temperature and rainfall, so it is presumed that two zones with a similar climate would develop similar life forms.
