A 6.0 magnitude earthquake was reported on June 22 at 21:54, in the city of Lima. According to the Geophysical Institute of Peru, the earthquake was located 33 kilometers southwest of Mala, in Cañete, Lima.
The earthquake did not generate a tsunami warning and there were no reports of victims. According to the executive president of the Geophysical Institute of Peru, "It was one of the strongest earthquakes that have been felt in recent years in Lima."
The mayor of Mala reported that several homes had been damaged and that telephone and electrical power lines were temporarily affected. On the other hand, on the Costa Verde, rocks fell from 80-meter-high cliffs. The same incident occurred on the Cerro Centinela; municipalities suspended traffic on the roads where the rocks fell. Besides, bottles and products fell and broke in supermarkets after the strong shaking. Jorge Chávez International Airport was also affected after proportions of the roof were detached.
Through social networks, many people communicated their fear and concern after the event. As well, they shared some images of the impact. After the earthquake, there were severe aftershocks at smaller magnitudes.
Indeci authorities have recommended acting calmly and finding safe areas near homes. It is also advisable to have an emergency backpack, with basic products.
