Many of us have social media. Most of us agree it is good because you can connect with others. However, it can have many negative consequences too. One consequence is that when we post something we may get comments and not all of them will be good. Negative comments are a form of bullying which has gotten worse during the pandemic.
Comments in social media have become a way for some people to bully others. As a result, many organizations have taken action to eliminate all the comments, good and bad, to avoid this problem. Some comments are ‘toxic’ (rude) because the people who make them don't have to show who they are. This makes them brave to say anything they want. Also people can forget they are commenting to real people and not just a screen. Therefore, when you post something you should remember that there is someone on the other side of the computer that could give you bad comments, and they might not be related to you but to the problems the other person could have.
Deciding whether or not to respond to a negative comment depends on how you are using your social media. A company may have to respond differently than someone using a personal account. Regardless of what account you have, when you post something, you should expect all kinds of comments: good, bad and sometimes even jealous comments.
On the other hand, last year there was news about people in power, such as the government, deleting or blocking posts in social media that didn't support them. The CBC has reported that the Canadian government has erased 1500 posts and blocked 22000 users on Facebook and Twitter. In my opinion, people should be free of giving their opinion, and if the government tries to stop them, they are violating the human right to free speech.
To conclude, the downside of social media is that we can receive negative comments. We need to think when you get all of these bad comments. Talk to your parents or teachers, someone you trust. Ignore the comment and walk away. Remember this comment is not a reflection of you and your worth, they are about the person that wrote it.
