Intensity increases between US presidential candidates

With the upcoming election in the United States, the dispute between Donald Trump and Joe Biden for the position of president is becoming more and more heated, but not only in the US. China and Russia are also fighting to see who will assume the highest position in the most powerful country in the world.

Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. is the Democratic presidential nominee for the 2020 election. He served as the 47th Vice President of the United States, besides Barack Obama. Biden was also the Senator for Delaware between 1973 and 2009. Now, he is running for the position of President of the United States, against his opponent, Donald Trump. (source)

Over the past few weeks, the dispute between Donald Trump and Joe Biden has become more and more fierce. Biden made a speech on Monday the 24th August, in which he asked the people of the United States whether they believed that the re-election of Donald Trump would make the country safer, he also criticized the president’s handling of the country: “Does anyone believe there will be less violence in America if Donald Trump is re-elected? We need justice in America. We need safety in America. We’re facing multiple crises — crises that, under Donald Trump, have kept multiplying.”. He also referred to the president’s mishandling of the Covid-19 pandemic: “Mr Trump, you want to talk about fear? Do you know what people are afraid of in America? They’re afraid they’re going to get Covid. They’re afraid they’re going to get sick and die. And that is in no small part because of you.” (video and source).

Donald Trump, on the other hand, has openly insulted his opponent: “I will have lost to a low-IQ individual. I don’t want that. ‘Sleepy Joe,’ I don’t want it (...)The guy doesn’t know he’s alive.”. Trump has also described Biden as weak and as “the worst candidate ever put up by the Democratic party” (source).

Furthermore, this dispute has not only stayed inside the United States. American intelligence officials have stated that Russia has been using a range of techniques to defame Joseph Biden and continues to try to interfere with the campaign to help Trump. Officials also indicated that China wants Donald Trump to lose the elections, but is still deciding whether or not to take more “aggressive” actions. These officials declared that the immediate threat is Russia: “Russia is a tornado, capable of inflicting damage on American democracy now. China is more like climate change, the threat is real and grave, but more long term.” (source)

We must draw attention to this issue because it will not only decide the future of the most powerful nation in the world. Whether Joe Biden or Donald Trump get elected could influence not only the United States but US-China and US-Russia relationships, which could and will affect economies, policies and the entire world. The question is, to what extent?
